Butch in Progress

Two gay girls with too many issues, DVDs and shared interests trying to out-smart/out-do/out-butch each other... constructively

Women in Prison, Girls behind Bars, Lesbians in Action*

[K] We have already discussed the trope of the lesbian nun, but even more numerous and notorious? The prison lesbian, butch warden, dyke behind bars, whatever you wanna call her. From The L Word and Bitch Slap to Gaga’s Telephone the lesbian prison inmate is seeing a kind of revival in contemporary media, but in honor of our Vintage Butches, I’d like to take this opportunity to explore the (exploitation) roots of this media stereotype in all its awful/campy/fun/degrading/sexy glory.

Pop Quiz: Which is (thankfully) not like the others?

[K] In Vevo’s Youtube-Advertisment for their major artists we have

- Lady Gaga’s smoking swagger in drag

- Katy Perry’s blank stare into a ventilator

- Beyonce’s “I’d rather not name that expression on a blog read mainly by girls who like vaginas”-face

Lady Gaga ft. Sugarland “You and I”

[K] … which means: Gaga plus a Girl with a Guitar.

It’s a queer lady’s (well, this one at least) idea of musical perfection!

Born This Way-tour will Look This Way

[K] Excitement!

Just three days after “The Monster Ball” has been awarded “Tour of the Year”, Lady Gaga released a teaser-picture for the stage design of the upcoming “Born This Way”-tour. Additional info regarding that pit-thing right in the middle:

“The Monster Pit” is General Admission only, and Little Monsters unlock it when they arrive to the arena or stadium.

Entry to “The Monster Pit” is relegated to the fans who have arrived first, waited all night, + dressed to “Ball.”

No dress code requirement. “Born This Way” means anything goes.

This description plus the picture make me wonder whether the “Born This Way”-concerts will be like a punk-showdown at Disney.World.

If so, count me in.

HAUS OF Ü ft. BRIDE

[K] From the new fashion video for Yoü and I.

Seems like Gaga’s swagger doesn’t depend on Jo’s presence…

"Why do so many notable critics seem so impervious to the emotion of the work?
Why such indifference?
Does intellectualism replace feeling?"

Lady Gaga in her latest memorandum for V Magazine

[K] I certainly hope not, but as as an academic/critic (outside this blog) myself I have to say: good question. (And oh how academics love good questions…)

Jo Calderone opens the VMAs, sings “Yoü and I”, goes down in pop history

(all, because his girl Lady Gaga asked him to)

[K] How could I not have this on my blog?

THIS.IS.EPIC (even all-caps doesn’t do this justice)

p.s.: sorry for the ad in the beginning, but it was difficult enough to find a non-geoblocked version of the video. Plus: Jo’s worth the minor distraction.

Jo Calderone @ the VMAs 2011

[K] Holy Smoke! We’ll post more on last night’s VMAs and Jo’s/Gaga’s performance later today, but until then let’s enjoy the hotness and… swoon.

The Diva Duet - It’s official!

[K] Lady Gaga + Cher. Singing a duet. Together. Written by Gaga.

No comment necessary. In my flamboyant flaming homosexual mind, this is diva-licious perfection.

p.s.: if you’re in the mood for some retro-reading, here’s my take on the “one year ago”-event, Gaga refers to in her tweet.

Semi-Coherent Thoughts on “Yoü and I”

[K] People (and more people, a lot of people actually) seem to think that Yoü and I is best video from the Born this Way-era (yes, I said era - wait ‘till Cultural Studies students from 2070 confirm this). I wholeheartedly agree.

Why? My semi-coherent analysis/interpretation/rambling about Yoü and I after the break (and a taste of Jo)

Dear Christmas, Meet the Monster Ball

[K] Fact: I need to be in New York on Christmas.

Barneys New York announced today it has tapped the “Born This Way” singer to create her interpretation of Santa’s workshop for its 2011 holiday campaign, and unveiled the shopping-bag artwork showing the outrageous fashionista in her signature sky-high boots, a glittery red onesie and a blue wig.

Gaga’s Workshop will take up the entire fifth floor of the chain’s Madison Avenue flagship men’s store starting in mid-November, where shoppers can snap up some Mother Monster-created goodies… (eOnline)
