Butch in Progress

Two gay girls with too many issues, DVDs and shared interests trying to out-smart/out-do/out-butch each other... constructively

Music Videos That Made Me Gay - Today: Sarah Bettens’ “Fine”

[B] “Fine” is a song of the 2004 released first solo album of Sarah Bettens, frontwoman of K’s Choice. There were actually two videos of the song, but this one is my personal favorite. Oh and to make sure you’ll watch it to the bitter end, the last 20 seconds are just awesome!

Music Videos That Made Me Gay - Today: Two Nice Girls “Let’s Go Bonding”

[B] Today’s band of choice dates back to the late 1980s. Two Nice Girls are, what you might call a badass, lesbian punk band from Austin, Texas. They released their same-titled first album in 1989, won a GLAAD award in 1991, and split up in 1992.

Not so much punk but still very gay their video of “Let’s go Bonding”:

Oh and they even do have a song called “Queer Song”.

For more vintage-lesbian hairstyles or old-school dressing advices you definetly need to check out their youtube-channel. For more music videos that made us gay you should go here.

Music Videos That Made Me Gay - Today: Grace Jones’ “Slave to the Rhythm”

[B] This is all my parents’ fault … I remember browsing through their CDs, looking at all this colorful and beautiful covers and then a cover of Grace Jones’ Slave to the Rhythm. I was so fascinated by her look I almost forgot to breath. In retrospect I know why: she was the first androgynous woman I’d ever seen. To this day Slave to the Rhythm has been one of my favorite songs and the video is still stunning and totally gay.

Music Videos That Made Me Gay - Today: Mika “Blame it on the Girls”

[B] Yeah I know Mika’s Blame it on the Girls was released in 2009 and as [K] pointed out it therefore is to new to count as a music video that made me gay. Still if I was younger this video would definetly have done its deeds. For me it’s kind of the musical version of A Clockwork Orange, at least that is what it reminds me of. Enjoy and feel the gay!

Music Videos That Made Me Gay - Today: Tracy Chapman “Fast Car”

[B] Fast Car was released in 1988 as a single of her debut album Tracy Chapman. I remember listening to this song for hours, staring at the television and wondering what it would be like having a girlfriend.

I remember we were driving driving in your car
The speed so fast I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped ‘round my shoulder
And I had a feeling that I belonged
And I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone

Oh and Tracy Chapman does not only make great music … she also is such a hottie. I saw her live once and was totally impressed by her presence. Love her!

Music Videos That Made Me Gay - Today: Skunk Anansie “Hedonism”

[B] I was 12 years old when Hedonism was released. I remember sitting in front of the television waiting for the video to come up, sometimes for hours. Gosh … Skin really was one of my biggest crushes. Yes, I definetly do have a thing for women with shaved heads.

Music Videos That Made Me Gay - Today: Melanie C “Never Be The Same Again”

[K] On a subtext-scale from Xena to Rizzoli & Isles, Melanie C and  Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes in the music video for “Never be the same again” are somewhere between Gabrielle finding soap beneath Xena’s behind in a shared bath and Jane Rizzoli handing out “consoling buttocks slaps” to Maura Isles, or, you know, pretty much gay like a rainbow-colored unicorn dancing at pride parade.

Hence, there was absolutely no way around including them in our list of gayness-inducing music videos, even though I was technically already pretty gay when this came out. But some reassurance was always nice. Here we go.

The lyrics (which I had learned by heart back then):

I call you up whenever things go wrong
you’re always there you are my shoulder to cry on
I can’t believe it took me quite so long
to take the forbidden step
is this something that I might regret

[…]

Now I know that we were close before
I’m glad I’ve realized I need you so much more
and I don’t care what everyone will say
it’s about you and me

The protagonists (one of whom already had been rumored to be a bit too sporty to be of the male-mating kind):

Single Cover - Never be the same again

Two women - one of them short-haired - with tattoos and muscles singing a about forbidden love while working out.

Well, I have no idea what my younger self saw in that video - I must have been desperate to read anything gay into that. See for yourself:

Music Videos That Made Me Gay - Today: Sinéad O’Connor “Nothing compares 2 U”

[B] Ok … this one is a little embarrassing. Anyways, I don’t care … all I can remember is that Sinead O’Connor was one of my early role-models. She and her video of Nothing Compares 2 U are probably the reason why I fell in love with short hair.

Music Videos That Made Me Gay - Today: Texas “When We Are Together

[K] On the radio today they played two 90’s songs in a row… in the resulting fit of nostalgia this new Butch in Progress-category was born.(Yup… random-ness rules here).

What can I say: Texas’ “When we are together” doesn’t only feature all kind of non-straight couples making out in a pool, it also shows 3 minutes of Sharleen Spiteri in a wet T-Shirt… My poor, confused teenage-heart didn’t really have a chance, did it?
